Gutter Saint mixtape

A few months back the lovely Avis Elizabeth asked me to contribute to her super rad arts zine. I gladly accepted, and since I don't know how to do anything else I made a mixtape. The zine also includes much more exciting contributions like short stories, poetry, art and photography. To quote Avis, the issue revolves around "Identity. How people, places/your environment, experiences shape self." It can be a bit of a downer at times, but then again so can life. If you'd like to check out the zine you can read the whole thing for free online right here. Even if I didn't contribute I would highly suggest it! Stream the mixtape (preferably while reading the zine), and then pick out your favorites or download the whole thing.
  1. School Night - Coma Foxes
  2. Her Sinking Sun (Rachel Levy Remix) - Coma Cinema
  3. Hollywood Snow - Ghibli

If you'd like to contact Avis about Gutter Saint (word on the street is she's always looking for more contributors) send her an email at aenorfle@g.cofc.edu

for Troy

I've had this one ready to post for at least half a week now. This whole "summertime" thing is not leaving very much time for the good old blogosphere. Anyways, this mixtape started out being entirely instrumental hip-hop and hasn't deviated too far from that general feel. I made it for an old highschool friend named Troy who now lives in Utah. Oh yeah, and I stole a few songs from my weekend wave mixtape without realizing it! Enjoy!!

Summer

I am officially finished with school for the year! To celebrate I'm posting my first mixtape in a while. I'm not entirely sure how much time I'll spend blogging this summer, but leaving Tallahassee definitely marks more than a few changes for me. As such, over the next few days I will also be posting lists of my favorite songs and albums of the year so far. Spoiler alert: 8 of my 15 favorite songs are on this playlist. Oh and by the way, little dude on the left is my dad.

  1. Sore Spores - Bobby

Its whatever

This playlist has been mutating since the beginning of 2011 and to be honest I'm kind of fuzzy on what songs were initially there. I can tell you that some of these songs are by my friends and that three of them (You Don't Surf, Losing It and Plastic Fangs) were added about fifteen minutes ago. More importantly I can tell you that this mixtape sounds exactly how I've been feeling for the past two weeks. Hopefully listening to it will be as soothing for you as making it has been for me.

  1. Out Getting Ribs - Zoo Kid
  2. Lord Knows Best - Dirty Beaches
  3. Wilderness (daytrotter session) - Active Child
  4. Absolute ONE - Luke Chrisinger
  5. You Don't Surf so Shut Up - Waylon Thorton and the Heavy Hands
  6. Sup Girls in the 60's - Cough Cool
  7. Do Your Best - John Maus
  8. Slip Away - Tearjerker
  9. Cigarettes - Vacation*
  10. Whatevering - Coma Cinema*
  11. Mateo - Yohuna*
  12. It's What Ev - Hips Like Cinderella*
  13. Losing It - Happy Trendy
  14. Plastic Fangs - Seamonster
  15. Winter Will Never Come - Kitteh Fur

If you've haven't had a crappy week recently and 50 minutes of (mostly) slow burners doesn't sound particularly appealing don't fret! Its looking like Weekend Jamz volume two will be ready by Friday, the beginning of Spring Break and hopefully the end of all this anxiety!

*I'm pretty sure these four are out of order in the zip. You should fix that!

Fifth Dimension (ATHID mixtape)

  1. Teen Angel - Heavy Hawaii
  2. Fifth Dimension - The Jameses
  3. Sexual Angel - Golden Axe (Ft Princess Chelsea)
  4. I Want Your Damage - Nice Face
  5. I Know - Ela Orleans

  9. Small Victories - Swimming Trunks
  10. Howolding Girls - Birthdays
  11. In Your Room - Ghost Animal (Golden Axe Remix)
  12. Blue Heron - Little Jungles

The original name for the mixtape was "Mickey Mouse" but I ended up cutting the Wavves track of the same name. Up until about 20 minutes ago I was going to keep the name, but I decided Fifth Dimension fit much better with the overall feel, not to mention the radical collage by Jheri Evans.

Weekend jamz (vol.1?)

Its the weekend.
Purity Ring's Ungirthed is recieving some very deserved attention from p4k.
I haven't posted a mixtape in far too long.
I think its time to celebrate the first two and change the third one. I literally made this mixtape 10 minutes ago, so sequencing isn't a big deal, and its significantly shorter than usual. Hopefully you won't feel too ripped off with 25 minutes of music instead of 40. Enjoy!

  1. Living in America (Remix ft Gucci Mane) - Dom
  2. Fever - Christian AIDS
  3. Replicants - Millionyoung
  4. Together - Teen Daze
  5. Roxxanne - Teams
  6. Everyday Dance - Star Slinger
  7. Skin Fox (Gobble Gobble Remix) - Mane Mane
  8. Ungirthed - Purity Ring
The .zip is out of order, and even though I said it didn't matter that much, this is the order I'll be listening to it in.

  21. Auld Lang Syne - The Beach Boys
Not going to lie, I threw this one together a bit hastily, but there's only 10 days till Christmas, and I'm really not expecting anyone to be jamming out to this on December 26th. This mix is considerably poppier than usual. I'm actually planning on burning this on a few discs and giving it to friends, and not all of those friends are interesting in the usual sort of music I post. Also, several of these songs are from really great Holiday Compilations that came out this year so I'm going to end this post by sharing links to those.

The Christmas Gig (like I said... poppier than usual)

Because I Love David...

Its only been his birthday for an hour but I'm up so I figure I might as well post David's birFday mix right now. I'm pretty proud of it, I'd say its a bit more accessible than the last few I've made, it even has two rap songs! I gave this one less to time to digest before posting than I usually do but I don't think its any less thought out than usual.

One other thing worth mentioning: in general if I'm really into an album it never ends up on these mixtapes. Album sequencing is a big deal to me and most great albums have to be taken in as a whole to be really appreciated. That said though I've made quite a few exceptions with this one: Goons, Conversation 16, Darling, and Coronado are all from albums that will probably end up in my top 10 this year.

Anyways, a word to the Birthday boy: I hope you enjoy this mixtape! I still jam to the mixtape you gave me like 3 years ago that has "California on my mind" on it. I'm pretty sure it was a Christmas mix. Anyways, have a great birthday up in Tigertown, but save some energy for seeing me next week! Remember buddy, if you ever feel like you want to write about the music you've been listening to you still have a username to publish on this blog. Cant w8 till ur prez, bttr make me USA music Czar.

Sorry Internet!

I've got one that's 40 minutes long but its not very cohesive and you probably have heard all of the songs already. I've posted about almost all of the songs included and I try to make the mixes at least primarily new songs.

If you made it through that, here's a list of songs I was planning on including that I haven't posted about yet. (Links are up now!)

Because I Love Andrew

My Buddy Andrew (Who's Ginormous CD collection is one of the main reasons I'm not stil listening to Breaking Benjamin and Nickleback) very recently had a birthday! I told him I'd give a mix CD for his birfday but of course I don't have any blank CDs! Since this is going to be transfered to a CD, and because I didn't post a mix last week this one is 80ish minutes instead of 40 like I said they would start being. Like I've mentioned in my last 2 posts I have a ton of homework I should be doing right now so no Individual MP3s (at least for the moment) but several of those songs I've posted about before or aren't new.

10/5/10 Mixtape

So I've decided to half the lengths of the playlists I'm making every week, but its not just because I'm lazy I swear! The reason I started making the playlists/mixtapes (I use the terms interchangeably if you haven't noticed) an hour and 20 minutes long is because thats how much can fit on a standard CD, and these mixtapes started out offline, with me just giving copies on CDs to my friends. When I was giving them out to friends I'd usually give them maybe 3 or 4 in a year, not 1 every week! Not to mention, most of the mixtapes that other people have made that I listen to(in order) are about 20 to 30 minutes long, so I'm might half the length once again. As is, I'm going to try to make all the new ones just under 40 minutes so I can fit two playlists on one CD in case I feel the need to start burning them again.
Tl;Dr? Mixtapes are going to be around 40 minutes from now on instead of 80 minutes. As always, mp3s below or grab the zip of the whole thing here. (Update: I forgot to put the .zip in order this week so check below for the order if you care)
The mix I made this week is probably tied with the mix I made for Jaime a couple weeks ago for my favorite. It came about last night when the song that ended up opening this playlist came up on shuffle and a certain line (Mountain of Flesh: "I'm thankful for these moments, even if they're meaningless") made me think of a certain girl. (not the girl in the picture above, shes just from the lovely google images, that would be waaay creepy). With that in mind all the songs on this mix are just songs that remind of purty girls I've known at one point or another(and trust me there are a ton at FSU). So yeah... I may or may not be that loser who gives mixtapes to girls he likes and these songs may or may not end up on a CD like that at some point in the future.

Mountain of Flesh - Gobble Gobble

Not much to say for this one, the opening track says it all! This mixtape was originally going to be just Dance Yrself Clean and a bunch of remixes, but then I realized no one is ever going to make a Dynamite remix better than the original. After that I just started slacking off and threw in some favorites that get me(and hopefully you) moving. GET IT

Leprechaun in Space

I've never seen Leprechaun in space, but I've seen Leprechaun 2 so if thats any indication, Leprechaun in space isn't as great as this mixtape is! I didn't really intend it to be, but the whole middle section of the mix is pretty much a tribute to Jay Reatard. Theres 3 songs by Jay himself and a whole bunch of songs I probably would never have gotten into if Jay's music hadn't reminded me that theres still good punk music out there. Man I miss hearing new music from that guy!

I actually do have mp3s for each song this time so thats fun but you can still download the zip here. If the mp3s aren't playing on this page try opening them in a new tab and they should work. If not email me, jonnaz[at]comcast dot net

Because I Love Jaime...

If we were still in actionville I would have just made this playlist into a CD, probably with "CHILL JAMZZ" written on it in sharpie. Considering we live a couple hours away though now I figured it would be easier to do over the interwebs, and besides this way people who aren't Jaime can still enjoy a collection of very good songs! Anyways, the song list is below, the emphasis on this one isn't so much that the music is new so three or four of the songs aren't from this year, and several others are songs I've been jamming to for a couple months. Like every other week, when I listen to these playlists its always in the same order. I spend more time changing the order so it flows than I do picking out the songs, so I advise playing it with shuffle OFF. Last but not least, if you are just super super jealous that you don't have a ridiculous picture of yourself on my blog/want me to make you a mixtape, just tell me and I'll make one for next Tuesday!

1. Meteor Eschat - Gobble Gobble
2. Young Hearts Spark Fire - Japandroids
3. Abel - The National
4. Swift Coin - Land of Talk
5. Hands Together - New Pornographers
6. All I Want - LCD Soundsytem

Music for Fall

I promised a sequel to "the end of summer mixtape" and here it is! Once again, its a .zip file so just click here, click the download button, find where you saved the download, right click the file and click "unzip." If those directions confused you, well then google it. The mixtape pretty much goes folk -> dream pop and ends with Sufjan's newest song and Albatross, one of the best songs I've heard this year. No individual mp3s this time, I'm just too lazy.

1. The Wild Hunt - The Tallest Man On Earth
2. Sarah Paige - Talking Tiger Mountain

END OF SUMMER JAMZ

This post is just a link to a mixtape I made celebrating/mourning the death of summer. Here's the track list, along with downloads/streams (or links to downloads/streams) for all the songs. I hope no one minds that all the mp3s aren't in the same player(I'm a pretty lazy guy). Also, If a song isn't hyperlinked that means theres no download but you can stream the song on the band's website... no point in posting that twice. Anyways, the zip probably has all the songs out of order, but heres the order I've been listening to them in. It flows pretty well from typical acoustic indie to afropop to chillwave.
I see it Coming - Guards
Shadow People - Dr Dog
You Can Keep Me Running Around - Suckers
Up Up Up - Givers
Funeral Song - Minks
Oh My God (its single no 8)- Cults
B.I.G. E.G.O. - Wise Blood
Breathing Fire - Red Wire Black Wire
Ambling Alp - Yeasayer
Very Busy People - The Limousines
Ghost in my Head - Niva
Running - Computer Magic

This mixtape is part 1 of 2 in the death of summer mixes so expect a sequel next Tuesday, along with a new playlists every Tuesday after that!(this might end up being a Fifty states project, but who knows)
P.S. Yeah, I did make the picture with google images and paint.
