Elvis Depressedly - Goner EP

Forgoing the drone stylings of his first Elvis Depressedly release, Coma Cinema mastermind Mat Cothran returns with a second EP a bit closer to his original sound. Not unlike his most recent Coma EP, Abandoned Lands, Goner takes Mat's general singer song writer form and spins it on its head. Goner is filled with antagonistic titles, lyrics and recording techniques dead set on frustrating its audience. Don't let that scare you off though, the EP is most certainly a work of art. If nothing else, Goner highlights two of Mat's very special traits: his ability to immerse his music in emotion, and his tireless self editing under the Coma Cinema name. If these tracks weren't deemed worthy for Coma Cinema's final release, I can't wait to hear what is.

According to Mat, Coma Cinema will be finished by the end of this year, and Empty Palaces probably won't be released. I have way too many thoughts on Coma Cinema that I'd like to pour out right now, but I'm going to leave that for another day. Instead, just watch the exhilarating, heartbreaking and all too fitting video for Business as Usual.

Tuesday June 7th recap

Yikes you guys. Sometimes the world of internet music moves a little bit too fast for me. Sorry for the brevity, but its been too good of a day for music to go in depth on everything I think deserves attention!

Bedroom R&B fire-starters Active Child and How To Dress Well teamed up for a new single, the first off of Active Child's first full length LP out August 23rd. Listen on p4k.

Sun Airway are jumping back on the radar with their first new single since releasing "Nocturne of Exploded Crystal Chandelier." Wild Palms is as shimmering and uplifting as usual but the synths parts seem to be a bit more complex than we're used to.

These sketches were both written and recorded by Cothran under very strict time constraints, and mostly served to reduce the stress that "official recording" can all too often cause.

Coma Cinema - Blue Suicide

Mat Cothran's fantastic third album is finally available today. Download it for free off of his website and buy a vinyl or cassette while you're at it! Seriously, this is not an album you want to miss out on. All of the raw emotion of home recording is clearly audible, but without losing an ounce of care or detail. With a title like Blue Suicide its obviously quite the downer, but the tracks themselves are so gorgeous that I don't think anyone can mind. I can't stress enough how strongly I suggest this album to anyone and everyone.

Coinciding with the release of the album, the official music video for the title track has been released. It deals with some seriously dark stuff, and might not be for the light(uhhh faint I mean) of heart.

Coma Cinema - Come On Apathy

Its funny how so many memories can be packed into less than a minute and a half. I'm almost certain Come on Apathy is the song I've listened to the most in the past two years and it obviously sparked a pretty intense love affair with anything Mat Cothran creates. If that wasn't enough, it was also the first Delicious Scopitone post I noticed on Altered Zones. Both Altered Zones and Delicious Scoptione have irrevocably shaped my musical taste, and DS still stands as my favorite music blog of all time even after it shut down. I can't think of a single song that made me want to start a music blog as much as this one.

A new Coma Cinema song off of Blue Suicide was premiered yesterday on Weekly Tape Deck! This one is a bit out of the ordinary for Coma Cinema. Hyperactive percussion, hand clapping, and piano, plus Mat picking up the pace on the lyrics boost the energy on this quite a bit-until you listen to the lyrics at least. If you've been keeping up (or you've ever used hypemachine) you've probably realized that more than half of the songs on the album are already out there. Regardless, I'm still incredibly pumped for Blue Suicide and you should be too!

Apparently after your song gets on p4k's playlist, things start moving! Not that Coma Cinema hasn't been moving for a long time, but I'm hoping Her Sinking Sun getting playlisted gives Mat a much deserved popularity boost. Pitchfork isn't the only place the track's been getting extra attention though, Teen Porn (abbreviated TP in the title because I don't really want people googling "Teen Porn" ending up on my blog) and Jaded Hipster Choir (Abbreviated JHC just because it sounds cool) have both remixed it.

Teen Porn includes Mat and Rachel from Kiss Kiss Fantastic. They only have 3 songs on their bandcamp. I'd tell you what I think of their music except that I can't think of anyway of describing that doesn't downplay how much I actually enjoy it. Just know that their bandcamp says their first single was relseased in 1969 and its listed under the genre Nihilism. Compared to their originals though, the Sinking Sun remix is less "emotionless sex jam" and more "post-zombie apocalypse club banger." Starts off with a music-box like melody(the kind that fascinates zombies) but when the beat falls in it's seriously trance inducing. I'd be swaying back and forth in my chair like a madman if my roommate weren't in the room at the moment.

While Teen Porn's remix doubles the length of the original, Jaded Hipster Choir clocks in just a few seconds shorter than the original. Of the three versions it I'd have to say its the happiest. I really love how this remix pulls the otherworldly backing vocals to the forefront; in the right light they sound a lot less ghostly... maybe even heavenly. Mat double tracks some harmonies on the original and JHC wisely only uses the higher of the two lines. Its oddly but pleasantly surprising to hear such a different mood for the song, especially when you consider that the only element added to the remix was the drum beat.

quick update.

Its been more than 15 minutes since I last posted and I think I'm starting to shake a bit. Its been a pretty busy weekend (in an incredibly fun way) for me here in Tally so that kind of explains the lack of posts. There has not however been of lack of songs worth posting about so I'm going to round up just a few right now. Also, I'm planning on posting a playlist on Thursday instead of Tuesday for my buddy David's birfday.

I've never really gotten into jj for whatever reason but this one just hypnotizes me. I already love intro by xx and the vocals (as far as I can tell the only addition) add beautifully. If I hadn't heard the original song I wouldn't have know it was a sample.

This song is nice. And that doesn't discredit the song at all, its just really sweet and captivating. I played this one without headphones in a few days ago, and I've caught not only myself, but one of my roommates humming it quite a few times this week.

I'm not sure how old this one is but its new to me. I'm pretty far behind on these guys, but through my backtracking I'm just now realizing that Dead Gaze is one of my favorite bands this year!

Obligatory Coma Cinema remix. Just kidding though, its really incredible! One of my favorite tracks on Stone Alone. I really love intro and outro of the original, and the way this remix stretches out and adds to both in incredible ways. I also love how theres a syncopated rhythm before totally screwing with the original, reminds me a bit of something Fiveng would do.

Sucker Punch (Kowhi Remix) - Coma Cinema

Last but not least, Kanye's newest G.O.O.D Friday track Chain Heavy is one of my favorites from the series. It features a slightly more light hearted/humourous side of Kanye we haven't seen very much of lately. Its got a weird late night jazz lounge rhythm section and a thin little paranoid Synth on top. Great Line: "Why ya got all caps on? Don Cheadle time! get extra black on 'em"

Coma Cinema - Caroline Please Kill me / Tour All Winter

I was actually hanging out with some friends last night at about 1:30 when I got a facebook update from Coma Cinema saying 2 new songs were up on Delicious Scopitone (of course). I had to honestly fight the urge to not just walk out without a word and go back to my dorm to listen to them. Anyways, its in between classes right now so I finally have the time to check them out.

I mean you probably know the drill by now, I freak out everytime I get to listen to a new Coma Cinema song but seriously, these two are amazing!

"Caroline, Please Kill me now" reminds me of a fully formed "Come On Apathy" (first Coma Cinema song I heard and maybe my favorite). Just like "Come on Apathy", it clocks in under two minutes but its pure pop-folk joy I'm going to be playing on repeat for probably hours at a time. Tour All Winter is a bit moire pensive, but its cool hearing Mat pick up the tempo on it and add a few extra layers to his sound. It finds a really sweet balance between his more upbeat tunes and his more reflective ones.

New Coma Cinema songs

Coma Cinema might be the artist I've blogged about most so far so its kind of unnecessary to say how excited I am for his new album Blue Suicide. Mat recently released a new song to download, and another to stream at his blog, presumably they will both be on Blue Suicide. I'm not such a huge fan of Crystal Ball Broken (the song streaming) but Desolation's plan (which you can get below or at his blog) is exactly what I've come to expect and love from Coma Cinema. Of course its less than 2 minutes long, and the kind of song you can listen to over and over again on repeat.
