Memoryhouse - This Will Be Our Year (Zombies Cover)

There couldn't be a more appropriate song for January first! The real question though is whether Memoryhouse meant "This will be our Year" as a universal sentiment or a bold declaration of self confidence. Singles like these could very well make 2012 their year, but only time will tell.

Premier: MPSO - Those Were Different Times (digital single)

Subpop duo Memoryhouse surround themselves with a talented group of muscians. You might recognize their former bass player as Foxes in Fiction, so its about time to round the group out. Below you can hear the debut single from touring drummer Daniel Gray's solo project MPSO (Mount Pleasant Sympathy Orchestra). Falling in similar territory to the most recent Foxes in Fiction release, its tempting to call these two tracks ambient. And while that wouldn't particularly offend Daniel, the label doesn't quite fit. On the A side the drums are too fierce, and the bass is too prominent. "Blue Night" falls into more traditionally ambient territory but I've never been a huge fan of the word at all. Those Were Different Time's false ending, and Blue Night's slow and steady build demand too much attention to fade into the background.

Daniel is currently working on his debut EP, tentatively titled "Wisdom Teeth" which should be out by the end of the year. The single doesn't have any official art at the moment, but I used my graphic design experience to whip that picture up in approximately 3 hours. If you're digging the single, check out a few demos and keep up with MPSO on tumblr.

Memoryhouse - Modern, Normal

Memoryhouse's The Years EP was one of my favorites of last year, so obviously I was very excited when they announced their signing to Sub Pop a few months ago. The Sub Pop release is still something to look forward to for old fans, as a few new songs will be added and all four originals are being re-recorded. Listen to one of the new ones below, the exceptional Modern, Normal:

Memoryhouse -Caregiver/Heirloom

Memoryhouse's new single comes out digitally tomorrow! I don't know what the heck I was doing a month or so ago when the A side, Caregiver made its way into the world but damn do I regret it! So I'm hearing the A and B sides for the first time today. The single seems like a very smart way to end the year. Caregiver and Heirloom sound pretty different, but they both help solidify Memoryhouse's established sound. Caregiver drops the usual synths and focus on the beat to highlight the sense of loss that seems to permeate all of the band's songs. Heirloom on the other hand embraces the electronic sound, and exceeds Memoryhouse's usual down tempo. Heirloom is probably the closest the band comes to "anthemic", but to be honest its a bit too reliant on the retro feel for me. Last but not least, theres an alternate, piano based version of Memoryhouse's classic Lately
