Dead Gaze - It's Not Real

With every release it becomes more and more apparent that Dead Gaze is not just "lo-fi." Cole Furlow is making pop music here, he's just using the a different set of tools. The signature "under water vocals", garish synths and syrupy guitar swirl together with pounds of angst, yet the end result still manages to sound shockingly beautiful.

It's Not Real will be included on a Dead Gaze 10" released through Group Tightener.

Dead Gaze - Somewhere Else 7"

Earlier this week Dead Gaze co-released a new single on the increasingly reputable (and french!) labels La Station Radar and Atelier Ciseaux. On the A Side and second B Side, singer Cole Furlow still sounds sort of like he's drowning, but the normal wall of distortion is significantly dialed back. Synths continue to play a bigger roles in Dead Gaze's music, but I think this is the first time I've heard an acoustic guitar. Furlow's garbled vocals have always been (somewhat inexplicably) emotionally affecting, but these two tracks offer an extra dose of melancholy to replace the peeled back aggression. The first B Side, "ENZ" is a left field ambient track off of Dead Gaze's first release that explores similar emotional territory.

Shea Stadium Archives

Shea Stadium (the Brooklyn DIY venue, not the former home of the Mets) opened an incredible new website today. Apparently the venue, which is important enough for a kid from Florida to have heard of it, has the reputation of recording just about every band that plays there. I guess the owners decided that the world needs to hear all of those recordings, so the website opened today with a massive archive! Check out more details on Altered Zones, or at their website. Bands recorded include Dead Gaze, Gobble Gobble, Future Islands, Small Black, Porcelain Raft, How to Dress Well and literally over 100 other bands. Recordings range from one song to an entire set, check out a sampling of the sessions from some of my favorite artists below.

Dead Gaze - Back and Forth (plus updates about this blog)

I've been jamming to Dead Gaze for a month or two now. Ever since I heard "Take Me Home or I Die Alone" off of their Firetalk single I've been hooked. I was just looking at their myspace a few minutes ago when I realized I hadn't seen this music video yet. Maybe its because its 1 in the morning but I found the music video to be WICKED COOL and figured I'd share even though its not exactly new. The song is off of their EP "End of Days Why Not You?" which I shamefully don't have yet. Hoping to change that soon, I just emailed the man behind Dead Gaze a few minutes ago asking where I can get a digital copy.
I also asked him about maybe making a mixtape for me to post on this blog! I'll definitely update more on this later when I've actually solidified some details but I'm going to try and get artists to start making mixes/ guest posts for the blog in the coming months.

P.S.-There are probably tons of typos in the above post... what can I say I just

P.P.S- If you read the above post and though "Hmm I could totally make a mixtape for this blog" regardless of if you have any musical talent, just look at the side bar above the mixtape section and EMAIL ME! Its not like I'm doing anything more important.

quick update.

Its been more than 15 minutes since I last posted and I think I'm starting to shake a bit. Its been a pretty busy weekend (in an incredibly fun way) for me here in Tally so that kind of explains the lack of posts. There has not however been of lack of songs worth posting about so I'm going to round up just a few right now. Also, I'm planning on posting a playlist on Thursday instead of Tuesday for my buddy David's birfday.

Get your Dub on. This ones a banger alright.
The HEAT by DCarls via Mad Decent

I've never really gotten into jj for whatever reason but this one just hypnotizes me. I already love intro by xx and the vocals (as far as I can tell the only addition) add beautifully. If I hadn't heard the original song I wouldn't have know it was a sample.

This song is nice. And that doesn't discredit the song at all, its just really sweet and captivating. I played this one without headphones in a few days ago, and I've caught not only myself, but one of my roommates humming it quite a few times this week.
Open Season - High Highs (once again via P4k)

I'm not sure how old this one is but its new to me. I'm pretty far behind on these guys, but through my backtracking I'm just now realizing that Dead Gaze is one of my favorite bands this year!

Obligatory Coma Cinema remix. Just kidding though, its really incredible! One of my favorite tracks on Stone Alone. I really love intro and outro of the original, and the way this remix stretches out and adds to both in incredible ways. I also love how theres a syncopated rhythm before totally screwing with the original, reminds me a bit of something Fiveng would do.

Last but not least, Kanye's newest G.O.O.D Friday track Chain Heavy is one of my favorites from the series. It features a slightly more light hearted/humourous side of Kanye we haven't seen very much of lately. Its got a weird late night jazz lounge rhythm section and a thin little paranoid Synth on top. Great Line: "Why ya got all caps on? Don Cheadle time! get extra black on 'em"
