Album Streams: Porcelain Raft/Cloud Nothings

For anyone out there afraid 2012 isn't off to a great start, Tuesday January 24th is looking like the first big day of the year. Two of the most hotly anticipated releases of the winter are both being released that day, Cloud Nothing's Attack on Memory and Porcelain Raft's Strange Weekend. Over the weekend, both albums were made available for streaming for those of us who prefer to listen before we buy. Coincidentally, both albums mark exciting new production styles for the bands. Porcelain Raft's first proper LP adds a professional layer of studio gloss, without fundamentally changing his warped, dreary style. Attack on Memory on the other hand marks a more dramatic departure, with the overall aggression on an entirely different level than Cloud Nothing's 2011 self titled. If you've got some time, dig into both full album streams below.

Porcelain Raft - Unless You Speak From Your Heart

Mauro Remiddi continues to build the hype surrounding his full length debut "Strange Weekend" with the release of his second single. "Unless You Speak from the Heart" follows in the high fidelity footsteps of the album's first single, and unwinds most of the nervous tension. Centering around a bouncing, whimsical synth line, the track is the first Porcelain Raft song that's unabashedly fun. The keys and percussion bring to mind a sugar coated Walk in the Park, but (not unlike that song) the guitar part is the real joy. The soldering iron line breaks through around the half way point and reminds us that we're in outer space, not cloud nine. This is still Porcelain Raft after all!

Porcelain Raft - Put Me To Sleep

Porcelain Raft's music has always had a sketch like quality to it, almost as if Remiddi was worried producing the songs into a more complete form would diminish the emotional impact. If this is his actual reason behind his generally raw approach, he seems to have changed his mind on "Put me to Sleep." The overall production levels seems higher than anything we've heard before, with slicker synth tones, less background noise and a dance-y, pulsing drum machine pushed farther up in the mix than usual. Fortunately, echoes of reverb laden vocals and guitar lines tear through the the track, making sure the track isn't too grounded in reality. After all, this is still the Porcelain Raft we know and love.

"Put me to Sleep"  is the first single off of Porcelain Raft's debut LP, to be released on Secretly Candian early next year. With all this success certainly coming his way, I just hope Mauro can still find time to dream.

Porcelain Raft - Come As You Are (Nirvana Cover)

Porcelain Raft's take on Nirvana's "Come As You Are" definitely feels more like a Porcelain Raft song than it does a Nirvana cover, but I'm not saying that's a bad thing. Where Mauro's sound may not be sonically influenced by Nirvana, he's definitely got the right attitude. The version is fragile, slightly disjointed and more then a little dark. I think Kurt would definitely approve.

Porcelain Raft - Daytrotter session/ Amateur's Feeling

Italian heartbreaker Porcelain Raft has a daytrotter session up today. You know the drill.

Update: Not only does Remiddi have a Daytrotter session, he also has a new label! The constantly respectable Secretly Canadian will release his first full length effort. Amateur's Feeling may or may not be on that release, but either way its worth sharing.
